Benchtops

BASIC TASK

Benchtops

Cleaning benchtops the right way

Stone benchtops, like marble, Caesarstone, engineered stone and quartz, are more delicate than they look. The wrong product or method can stain, mark, etch or dull the finish, and that damage is often permanent and expensive to repair.

The safest approach is simple: treat every benchtop the way we treat stone. The steps below are safe for stone, laminate, timber and any surface you will come across, so make them your habit on every bench, every time.

- Step 1. Clear the bench
Remove everything from the surface first. Move the kettle, jars, appliances and any items to one side so you can reach the whole benchtop.

- Step 2. Choose a safe product
Use warm water on its own, a product made specifically for stone, or neutral dishwashing liquid. The dishwashing liquid must be neutral, a plain mild dish soap, nothing strong or heavy.

- Step 3. Apply product to the cloth, never to the bench
This is a hard rule. Spray or pour onto your cloth or sponge first, then wipe. Product sprayed straight onto stone can soak in and leave a mark before you have even wiped it.

- Step 4. Clean the whole surface
Wipe edge to edge, including the parts that already look clean, not just the spots you can see. Use a soft cloth or a non-scratch sponge only.

- Step 5. Do not let product sit
Wipe product off as you go. Product left sitting on the surface is what causes staining and marking.

- Step 6. Never leave buckets or bottles standing on the benchtop
Do not rest any bucket or product bottle on the surface, not even for a moment. Residue at the base of them can sit unnoticed and slowly damage the finish. This applies to every product, not only citric or strong ones.
